An ashuri can only die if their life essence gets taken completely, which is done by forcefully pulling the Syoran from their tails while their opponent is incapacitated and crushing it on their hands, thus absorbing their life essence completely. The flaming soul is what keeps them alive and is equivalent to a heart, so ashuris that have their Syoran crushed are immediately killed.
Whenever an ashuri is killed, their souls go to the underworld but their body stays on earth. Their body is retrieved and taken to a mausoleum (a large burial chamber) exclusively for housing the bodies of deceased ashuris. Preserving the sanctity and wholeness of an ashuri body is very important to ashuri culture, regardless of the deceased ashuri's rank, because all ashuris need a vessel to return to if they are revived or able to otherwise make it out of the underworld. Therefore, there are ashuris working at the mausoleum who specialize in preservation magic used to keep ashuri corpses safe and healthy.
The mausoleum is located on a neutral ground where ashuris of all ranks can come to visit and pay respects to their passed loved ones as they wish, without having to worry about being attacked or hunted while visiting. The area is heavily guarded by Guardians and all visitors are flanked by Guardian escorts to ensure no harm comes to the bodies.
When a deceased ashuri's soul arrives in the underworld, they are given a chance to keep their souls in existence by fending off the creatures that lurk its depths. Their only hope is if an ashuri that wins the tournament wishes for their revival. If they are killed in the underworld by the creatures, their body on earth will start to slowly vanish and their soul will cease to exist. It will then be impossible to "wish" them back to life.
When an ashuri obtains another ashuri's Syoran, they gain all of the deceased's life essence and lifespan, as well as the ability to summon the fallen ashuri's weapon. They will also develop markings on their face, beneath the eyes, called Soul Keeper markings that show they have at least one other ashuri's Syoran. These markings can appear when they summon the other ashuri's weapon or use any of their abilities. Otherwise, the markings can disappear and reappear at will. The number of Soul Keeper markings does not have a direct correlation with the amount of Syorans the ashuri possesses. Soul Keepers can have between 1 to 6 markings total.
When an ashuri kills another ashuri for the first time, with the genuine intention of killing them, they will start to develop bloodlust. It will become increasingly difficult to resist the urge to kill again, and the urge will only rise with every new murder the ashuri commits. This is how ashuris become Slayers, consumed by bloodlust. This bloodlust is how Executioners are able to distinguish and track down ashuris; however, no ashuris can immediately sense whether another ashuri is a slayer or has bloodlust. Rather, they are only able to discern their opponent's killing intentions by animal instinct, particularly in combat.
It is impossible for the average ashuri to distinguish between a Slayer or a non-slayer ashuri just by looking at their Soul Keeper markings. An ashuri with Soul Keeper markings does not automatically make them a Slayer, because they could have received the Syoran through non-malicious means - such as by accident, as a gift, out of self-defense, etc. Therefore, even a Guardian can possess Soul Keeper markings. A Slayer will always possess Soul Keeper markings.
