Magic occurs naturally to all ashuris because of their connection with nature, though some possess a higher ability than others -- or, in some cases, no ability at all! An ashuri's propensity for magic can vary depending on genetics (i.e. hailing from a bloodline of strong mages increases the likelihood of an ashuri being skilled in magic), training and learning to manipulate mana effectively, and personal ambition. Some forms of magic are not available to all ashuris either due to the intensive specialization or the terrible sacrifice it requires.
All magic requires some form of sacrifice.
In the case of normal magic, exchanging life essence to use the earth’s mana is necessary (because mana is like the earth’s own life essence).
Exchanging life essence for mana uses up stamina.
So even if an ashuri has an abundance of life essence, they can only convert so much of it until they collapse from lack of stamina.
Ashuris naturally have access to a limited amount of mana, which they can use for no cost.
They can build up this mana limit during battle, and then deplete it when they execute a special technique.
A special technique is usually associated with the element that an ashuri specializes in. For example, a fire elemental ashuri might be able to execute a powerful flaming sword attack.
Afterwards, they are unable to execute the technique again unless they rest for an extended period of time (during which the mana will restore naturally, like stamina), or if they decide to sacrifice life essence for more mana.
There is a grouping of "main magic" that is accessible to all ashuris:

✨ ELEMENTAL MAGIC
Elemental magic simply involves the manipulation of the natural elements, which ashuris use to imbue their weapons with elemental power and, to a limited degree, manipulate some aspects of their immediate environment. All ashuris are born with an innate connection to the four elements, some with a greater connection to certain elements than others.
It centers around four base elements:
Ashuris can only choose to focus on one element.
This can be any one of the base, cross, or divine elements.
It’s not necessary to specialize in any element.
Ashuris can fight with pure physical power and still not be at a huge disadvantage against elemental specialists.
Elemental magic has a limited range.
Ashuris can’t use it to “cast spells”. (i.e. no throwing fireballs from a distance)
It cannot be used to affect the environment too much. (no changing weather; but, for example, watering flowers with a nature-imbued watering can could make the plants grow faster!)
Elemental magic effects can be dispelled.
As long as the afflicted ashuri has the available mana, stamina, and general magical potency to do so. It will be harder for an ashuri to immediately dispel magic from an opponent who has stronger magic capabilities than them.
Elemental specialists can still be harmed by their own element if they are overexposed to it.
A fire-elemental ashuri can channel flames into their weapon without getting burned.
On the other hand, being completely engulfed in flames / walking through a fire runs the risk of getting burned.
It centers around four base elements:
- Fire
- Earth
- Water
- Wind
- Lightning - (fire + wind)
- Mist - (fire + water)
- Wood/Nature - (water + earth)
- Ice - (wind + water)
- Sand - (earth + wind)
- Metal - (earth + fire)
- Light
- Dark
- Psychic
Ashuris can only choose to focus on one element.
This can be any one of the base, cross, or divine elements.
- Once a cross element is unlocked, the ashuri is locked into that cross element and no longer has magical access to unrelated base elements.
Ex. An ashuri born with an affinity for Fire, Water, and Wind chooses to master Water and Wind in order to gain access to Ice. Upon doing so, the ashuri loses access to Fire due to the elements' conflicting mana circuits.
An Ice-elemental ashuri can still perform feats of water and wind to a certain extent, but the primary affinity is now Ice. - Divine-elemental ashuris are unable to tap into the base elements (making them also unable to access the cross elements) due to their pure affinity for magic that transcends them beyond the base. They are only able to perform Light, Dark, or Psychic, with no crossover.

- Cannot bring the dead back to life.
- Injuries caused by blood magic cannot be easily healed.
- Can no longer specialize in any of the elements.
- Healing magic requires a special kind of concentration and intensive mana usage as compared to elemental magic; specializing in both healing and elemental magic is impossible.
- However, healers might still have limited access to one of the elements for use of healing. Ex. imbuing a bowl of water with healing magic.
🩸 BLOOD MAGIC
Although taboo and strictly forbidden by ashuri law, some ashuris continue - or attempt - to practice blood magic.
This method of magic involves immense sacrifice in the form of blood or bodies.
It is such a strain of magical and physical power that many ashuris end up either killed or mutilated in their attempts to practice it.
Because most records of blood magic have been destroyed, and most former practitioners of blood magic executed, blood magic remains a mystery to modern-day ashuris.
There also remain many things undiscovered that this magic is capable of, and many strange occurrences caused by blood magic that simply cannot be explained by rational means.

- Firstly, sacrifices must be acquired. Live sacrifices produce the most potent results.
- Secondly, the user must sacrifice both their own blood and a significant portion of life essence.
- Thirdly, they must undergo a ritual that can involve incantation or symbol-drawing.
- The magic is volatile and will often have unexpected and dangerous results.
- Any usage of blood magic will cause the ashuri to be enveloped in a black aura that can be seen by Executioners, as well as "sensed" by other ashuris.
- In the past, humans were mainly used for sacrifice. However, it was discovered that ashuris have even more potent blood and soul to utilize for blood magic.
- Rarer subtypes of ashuris, such as Kemoris and Yokaris, possess physical bodies considered extremely desirable by blood magic practitioners because of the power it holds.
- In the ashuri black market, clippings of hair/fur, fingernails, patches of skin, and vials of blood from Kemoris or Yokaris are valuable commodities.
- Imbuing a weapon with blood magic can have mixed - usually dangerous - results, because of the weapon's connection to the user's soul.
- However, successfully doing so can enable the weapon to permanently sever limbs or even siphon life essence upon contact.
- A weapon imbued with blood magic, particularly magic created from human blood, could enable an ashuri to bypass Tetru's paralysis curse and allow them to freely harm humans.
- A blood-magicked weapon is often very obvious in appearance, usually possessing a blood-red hue or glow.
- A failed blood magic attempt, or conducting blood magic too much, can cause an ashuri to become corrupted.
🛡️ GUARDIAN MAGIC
In order to better protect other ashuris and to defend against Slayers, Guardians are specially trained in a branch of magic.
Most Guardians have a higher magical potency than other ashuris and are usually the only ones capable of performing this magic.
The most common branch of Guardian Magic is Aura Sensing.

- Chain Summoning: unleashing magical chains from their palms in order to trap or entangle the Slayer.
- Conditions: they are impermanent chains and require a concentrated magical effort to upkeep.
- Disorienting Magic: drawing upon the elements to paralyze or disorient the target (ex. lightning paralysis, ice freeze, stone, blindness, illusion magic i.e. hypnosis)
- Conditions: like the above, these are impermanent and could be eliminated by a Slayer with a high magical affinity.
- Mark Manipulation: a rare type of neutralization magic, involves manipulating the Slayer's curse mark in order to force the paralysis curse.
- Conditions: can only be performed if the Guardian has concentrated physical contact with the slayer.
