The “Ashuri Curse” was created by the god of death Tetru to punish ashuris for their greed. Upon being cursed, an ashuri's lifespan will immediately be reduced by half, their curse mark will appear on their body, and their heart & soul is converted into a soul-like that hovers above the tip of their tail, known as the Syoran (pronounced "shyo-rahn") or the "flaming soul". The Syoran is the core of every ashuri's being because it contains their soul, which in turn contains their memories, experiences, and everything that makes them an individual.
Another use of the Syoran is to store life essence, which helps extend their lifespan. If an ashuri does not gather life essence, the essence stored in their Syoran will dwindle little by little and so will the ashuri's strength. As soon as it runs out, the ashuri dies of what is considered a "natural death" - the depletion of life essence without having their Syoran crushed. With a natural death, they do not go to the underworld, they will instead find peace and eternal slumber.
The final use of the Syoran is to house an ashuri's soul weapon. If the Syoran is seized from an ashuri, then so are the weapon and the weapon's abilities.
Ashuris exchange life essence between one another either through battling each other or even out of kindness for their own species. There are even ashuris that willingly give their own Syoran to the other ashuri with intention of saving the life of that ashuri. But there are ashuris who forcefully take their opponents Syoran wanting all the life essence to themselves.
